This marks the end of the first full week in Vancouver. It's been a lot of fun getting to know people. I've met some really neat scientists at CVO, including a couple who might have room for me to join them in some field work on a few different volcanoes this summer. That's really exciting, especially since Joe isn't really a field geologist- he's more experimental, so he spends a lot more time using a computer and working in the laboratory. That's an important part of geology too, but you know me... I'd rather get dirty! So I'm keeping my fingers crossed that an opportunity will turn up.
I'm also getting to know my housemates pretty well. Jamie and Kaleb are great, and we're having a lot of fun (still waiting for Bissett). We built an "entertainment center" in our living room out of two of Jamie's moving boxes, which works quite nicely for watching movies on a laptop. :) Oh! We have a table! One of the scientists offered us a folding table from the warehouse at the observatory, so we can now eat our breakfasts and dinners somewhere other than our laps. :)
Tonight Kaleb, Jamie and I celebrated the end of our work week with the 3 Bs: burgers, beer, and bowling! Or, in my case, 2 Bs and a W: burger, water and bowling. :) Big Al's Sports Bar & Grill is a couple blocks from our apartment (on our way to work), so we've been intrigued for a while now, and decided to check it out. The food was great, and we had a lot of fun bowling. Then we came back and watched some Indiana Jones. Overall, a good end to the week.
We're not quite sure what the weekend will hold, but I think we're planning to do some hiking in the mountains in northern Oregon at some point. The weather is (finally!) supposed to be nice, and we've heard of a few places that are supposed to have a great view of the Cascades on a clear day. So we're hopeful!
What kind of a geologist has WATER with their burger???
